This treatment involves warm herbal oil, which is prescribed by our doctors, and a clean cloth bundle. The patient undergoing pizhichil is made to lie down in a wooden container, which is of the same size as that of the average human body.

Shashtikapindasweda or Njavarakizhi is an ayurveda treatment which uses Njavara rice as the main ingredient in its preparation. Cleaned and then boiled in a mixture of milk and herbal decoctions, the Njavara rice is then tied in a suitable cloth and made into a bolus. The bolus is then applied over the body while simultaneously immersing it in a warm mixture of milk and herbal decoction intermittently. Before Njavarakizhi is administered, oil may be applied all over the body along with gentle massages. This treatment helps strengthen the nerves, relieving arthritis, and curing neurological complaints. It nourishes the tissues, softens the skin, and enhances complexions. It is administered for certain diseases like hemiplegia, facial paralysis, muscular atrophy, etc.

Choornapinda is a bolus/potali with a specific dry medicated powder. Sudation using this bolus is called choornapindasweda. This bolus is applied for 45 to 60 minutes with the help of two masseurs. It is usually prescribed for individuals with arthritis, myalgia, spondylosis, neurological, sports injuries, or neurological disorders.

Lepanam is the application of medicated herbal paste on targeted body parts. It is very effective for alleviating inflammatory conditions, and is also good for treating skin diseases. Lepanam is also used for improving one’s skin complexion, during pain management. The thickness of the paste depends on the severity of a particular condition. The paste has to be removed before it dries. Lepanam is not administered to patients who are sensitive to heat and/or have sensitive skin. When applied on the face, the procedure is called Mukhalepam.
